Announcing the Judges - Bath Open Art Prize 2019
We’re excited to announce this year’s judges.
Artist Sandra Porter RWA and Holburne Director Dr Chris Stephens will select the exhibitors for this year’s Bath Open Art Prize, on show at 44ad artspace from 24 May to 9 June, during Fringe Arts Bath Festival 2019.
They will also award the 1st Prize of £250 sponsored by Andrews Property, and the 2nd Prize of £100 sponsored by Society Café, to be announced on Monday 27th May, alongside the 44ad Exhibition Opportunity winner, awarded by Katie O’Brien.
Visitors will be invited to vote for their People’s Choice, who will receive £50 art vouchers sponsored by Minerva Art Supplies, which will be announced on the closing weekend.

Sandra Porter RWA
Porter studied Fine Art at Stourbridge College of Art, gained an MA in Fine Art Painting from Chelsea School of Art and studied printmaking with Master Printmaker Dorothea Wight.
A contemporary abstract artist interested in the symbiotic relationship between painting, drawing and printmaking Porter taught for many years and is now a full-time artist.
As well as running printmaking workshops and curating at the Black Swan Gallery in Frome she exhibits widely in the UK and abroad. Shows in 2018/19 include ‘The Trinity Buoy Wharf Drawing Prize’ and ‘Albert Irvin and Abstract Expressionism’ at The RWA in Bristol.
Dr Chris Stephens
Stephens, director of the Holburne Museum since summer 2017, was previously Head of Displays at Tate Britain and the lead curator of Modern British Art. As well as responsibility for the planning and programming of the collection rehang there, he curated a number of exhibitions, including Francis Bacon in 2008, Henry Moore in 2010 and more recently David Hockney.
Having a particular interest and thorough knowledge of the artists of Cornwall, he has also been involved in a number of successful exhibitions at Tate St Ives including Barbara Hepworth and Peter Lanyon.
