Frequently Asked Questions - Artist submissions

Bath Open Art Prize FAQs:

Why do you charge a fee to enter the Bath Open Art Prize?

This is the only annual event for which we charge an entry fee.

While we’re all volunteers, we can’t run an exhibition for free. Your entry fee goes towards hiring the exhibition space, annual insurance, website hosting, tools and equipment, white paint, coffees for volunteers, printing and social media posts — functional stuff.

It is also partly a fundraiser to support our other major annual project, so anything not spend on the Bath Open Art Prize exhibition goes to make Fringe Arts Bath Festival happen.

I live in Papua New Guinea / I am under 18 / I don't work in the arts. Can I submit my work?

Yes, everyone can submit.

Fringe Arts BAth Festival FAQs:

Why do you ask for £20 if my work is selected for FaB Festival?

It’s crowdsourcing.

It is free to submit to FaB exhibitions, to keep things as accessible as possible.

Yes, everyone can submit.

Can I put work forward for more than one FaB Festival exhibition / project?

Yes, you can send work to as many projects as you’d like to.

If you’re sending the same work to more than one Curator, it’s worth letting them know so they can discuss it with each other if they feel the need.

How else can I help FaB Festival?

You can manage festival volunteers, install work, lend us your venue, lend us your woodwork skills, fundraise, donate, write press releases, tell people about the festival, interview visitors, collect data, write articles and plenty more.

We’d love your help, click here to let us know, or donate some money here.

Why are you asking me to help / invigilate FaB Festival?

It’s crowdsourcing.

The festival is run by volunteers, and most of us have jobs. Joining in and invigilating to keep the venues open, helping install & take down work makes the festival happen; we couldn’t do it without your help.

Also it means you get to meet other artists, curators, volunteers and team members. Loads of great conversations and amazing projects stem from this. The general public get to meet you and are often inspired to take part too.

We understand this might not be possible if you are based abroad for example.

What media or type of art do you accept?

All types! Different exhibitions and projects might call for any media, or specific media for example ‘MP4, or a VHS tape’. This will be stated on their individual project page.

‘All media accepted ’ means exactly that. A project stating ‘all media’ will consider all approaches using any material you can think of, including these and many more; oil paint, woodblock print, lino print, collage, audio files, 3D printer files, paper sculpture, slip cast ceramics, found objects, journalling, performance, photography, a website, finger painting, mechanical sculpture… absolutely anything you can think of.

The important thing is for your work to relate to the project or exhibition’s topic, and the brief set by the Curator/s.

Where will the FaB Festival exhibitions be?

All around the city of Bath, in empty shops, on the streets, and sometimes online.

We never confirm exact venues until the spring which is part of the excitement.

We work with our Curators to place our exhibitions and events in the best locations possible, combining shows which work well near each other, curating the festival as a whole.

We’ll announce these on twitter, instagram, facebook and Linkedin, and you can join our mailing list here for updates.
