SCREENPLAY

Call-out to Artists:

The SCREENPLAY exhibition presents a diverse set of works made for light projection or digital monitor display, with an emphasis on pieces that reach beyond the conventions of narrative, storytelling, information and persuasion. Of course, artists have been exploring such possibilities from the very inception of moving pictures - through works intended to surprise, challenge, reflect upon and even reinvent the familiar uses of the screen in familiar surroundings.

The word “screenplay” was invented to describe an ordered text that sets out in detail the content and parameters of a nascent film. But in this enterprise we are using the word to describe other fields of play, where possibilities can remain wide open - for example, play as a source of surprise, release and joy, or play in terms of music and other sounds, dance and other movement, poetry and other words, light and other phenomena… and, importantly, play as idea, opinion and argument.

SCREENPLAY will acknowledge the reality that moving pictures today pour out to potential viewers almost without constraint, via all kinds of device in all kinds of location. Its screens will be found across Bath, in a variety of settings, including the internet. And, on special occasions, in juxtaposition with live performance.

Individual artists are invited to submit up to five distinct works. Groups of artists can submit collectively, with an participation fee being charged for each set of five works. Individual "curators" or organisations can bring together work with a particular theme or character. The fee will also be charged on the same basis of five works. Recent pieces will be especially welcome but older output can be included, particularly if it reveals the development of an artist over time.
